We are working on locating the error and making sure it will not happen again soon
We suspect the error was at K-Net somewhere, since the WiFi did work properly and the “old” system did not have any downtime.

As many noticed, K-Net had trouble and the internet was down until 11 PM instead of 5 PM last Monday. They apologize.
Tomorrow Friday at around 3 PM there will be another interruption. This time a lot shorter they say. They estimate it to be around 30 minutes.

Network maintenance – Update 1

Due to unforeseen events yesterday, K-Net had more downtime than expected doing their maintenance and the Internet was down from noon to around midnight.
Everything accept the link to DTU has been retored to normal on new hardware.
To fix this link to DTU (and Campusnet) K-Net need some spare parts that should arrive by the 18/10/11 and a plug ‘n play should happen within short time.

Network maintenance in the autumn break

During the Autumn break you will experience downtime due to maintenance on our network infrastructure located here at the dormitory and at K-Net as well. We are upgrading our network equipment so that the K-net Utilliy will become obsolete.
Specifically Monday 17th from 12 noon to 5 PM K-Net has announced that they will be changing core equipment and the internet connection will be unavailable. During the next days until Thursday K-Nets website might be unavailable in periods, and mails sent to @nybro.dk and @k-net.dk addresses might be delayed in periods.
This upgrade will also affect the Wireless Network.

For the technically interested, the work during this upgrade is the following:
We will reconfigure our network switches so that each room plug on the wired network has its own VLAN. This will enable K-Net to do the traffic counting and by law required traffic logging without the K-Net Utility. We will be changing the main switch to support this.
K-Net will set up a new firewall which will take over from FW2 with settings for the new VLAN setup. K-Net will setup new switches and two new servers (DNS, mail, management, etc.) to work together with the new firewall. They will also be changing rack closets.
The wireless network and kitchen computers will remain with the old system with the K-Net Utility and FW2 a little longer, but will also eventually be free from the K-Net Utility. We will be changing at least one switch in each block to support this, but we do not expect that the new switches can be delivered in the autumn holidays.
While not being 100% certain yet, as it has not yet been approved by the board of K-Net, the idea is that the traffic limit will be much higher than now, and will be more “soft”. If you exceed the traffic limit you will have limited internet speed instead of being blocked completely. It is also planned that it should be possible to choose to have your incoming ports open.
Because the wireless network and the kitchen computers will be running on the old system for at while longer, the old traffic limit will still be in place there.

K-net problems

K-net have problems during the evening, because of the heavy usage.
This is of cause not how it should be, and K-net is working on a solution that hopefully will work after the summer holidays.
The last week there has been no accounting of traffic. This was to see the effect on the server load. Unfortunately this only helped for a couple of days. The accounting will be reenabled tomorrow morning around 08.30.

Problems with login into K-net Firewall

As many has noticed it can be a hard time to log on to K-nets firewall (fw2) doing the time interval from 16-23, especially Saturdays and Sundays.
The problem is not at Nybrogård dormitory but at the firewall server at DTU.
The server cannot handle the pressure of the many user logins on doing this time period, due to lack of memory.
Personnel at K-net are aware of the problem and didn’t want to disturb the examperiod. Also they are voluntary and don’t get paid for their work, therefore they have not had the time to get the work to be done.
Within the next period of time K-net will work on a new system or an upgrade of the exiting system. Until then you have to be patient.
The more technical term for the lack of memory in the server: Every time a user logs on, a small amount of memory are reserved for that user and when the server reach about 1500 simultaneous users it runs out of memory and all CPU power are used for interrupts and errorhandling therefore the users able to login will notice it takes some time, others see a connection timed out for both servers.
I hope this will clean things a bit.

Bike Clean up

This day all unused bikes will be removed.
If you wish to keep your bike put a BLUE strip on the saddle post. If you own other bikes, bike spare parts bike trailers etc. that are placed in or nearby the bike parking areas or bike shed, please put a blue strip on it.
You can get more strips at the office in the opening hours.

It will be a great help if you can give a hand with the cleaning on sunday so please show up.
All bikes or likewise pilled away by the cleaning team is not free for taking.
Removing bikes or other stuff from this pile, is seen as stealing!
